this season's first episode of the city
showed whitney's debut fashion show of her line, whitney eve.

although old news... i really liked the collection.
i would love to have almost every single piece in my closet-
but what struck me the most about the show was the makeup.

i ADORE the nymph-like softness and can't get enough of the lip colour!

(yes, i am aware that she is Black and i'm not...
but i still think it will look okay?)

i'm aware that pink lips has been in for a while, but

while i was researching applied anthropology the other day, i stumbled upon (can i still technically say that without a copyright?) this site: http://theanthropologist.net/ .

it is... "an online space for inspiring works and inspiring individuals" and is "a testament to the idea that revealing the passions of one person can result in the progress of many".

there is a short film that i particularly LOVE done by andrew zuckerman featuring (none other than!) maggie gyllenhaal, peter sarsgaard and ebon moss-bachrach. it is about the interplay between a couple and their friend during a weekend in the country.

anyway, my fascination for peter sarsgaard is no secret, and maggie gyllenhaal is basically the granny smith of my eye. ebon moss-bachrach is actually from mona lisa smile, and i fell in total lust then. anyway he looks GOOD now.

so i watched 'an education' last night, and i really enjoyed it!

i heart peter sarsgaard (even though, he actually kind of frightens me - i don't know what it is!)

and carey mulligan was so effortlessly captivating as jenny, the precocious 16-year old

anyway, the actor who really caught my attention was matthew beard. he plays graham, jenny's fellow orchestra member who has a MEGA crush on her.

so i've arrived in as, norway (pronounced oass) and it 's pretty good so far!

i have five roommates (two boys, three girls) and they were right when they said that

Norwegians are reserved! I'm slowly getting to know them and the Norwegian tv obsession

with Hell's Kitchen and The Biggest Loser!

Alot of people mistake me for American...which I am quick to correct them on - but they don't care. There's a pretty large hatred (maybe too strong a word?) for Americans here, so I don't want to be mistaken for one!

A few friends and I went into Oslo the other day and I really liked it! I needed to know that there was more to Norway than this little town- and there really is!

There is literally an H&M on every corner (its the Norwegian equivalent of Starbucks!)

and I obviously have ZERO problem with that.

I having bought anything yet because I'm nervous about spending too much money! I'm going to Helsinki in a couple weekends though - so I won't hold back there!

I also think that aside from the occasional duty free purchase... it's going to be a pretty dry semester. A 26 of liquor is equivalent of $40 CDN here! So I think I'll be relying on $5 tall cans

(yikes! muy caro!)

i was in toronto this past weekend visiting my sister (photos to come)
and on my way to the bus station to come home,
i made a stop in at h&m.

as always, i found some wonderfully cheap items...
but being that i am attempting to budget myself this semester,
i landed in line with only two items: a pair of light denim leggings with ankle zippers
and a thick, knit winter headband.

i was two spots away from the cash...when i thought of my dad
and how disappointed he would be with my spending habits on frivolous, unnecessary
items (he doesn't necessarily view fashion as a living staple).

so i ducked out of line and surrendered my goods and booked it out of the store
before i could talk myself back into it.

but, alas! ALL I HAVE BEEN THINKING ABOUT IS THOSE JEGGINGS!

i'm dying inside. all i want to do is go back and get them, so much so,
that i'm trying to devise a way that i can get to h&m during my one hour stop over
next weekend on my way home for thanksgiving.

despite the fact that i'm really excited to get back to all my friends
in guelph... i'm sad to be leaving ottawa!

i always start off my summers with grandiose ideas as to how
i'm going to spend my free time, and at the end of every summer,
hardly any of these ideas are realized!

however, i find that i don't really mind.

on thursday mado, erica, jacob, rowan and i went
to rowan's cottage near blue sea lake and it was one of the best
weekends (pseudo-weekend?) of the summer!

we hiked half an hour to the camping spot and set up camp by the water,
went swimming, played cards, jammed by the fire (despite the fact that
i had no musical talents to offer up!) and definitely did a little
damage to our livers.

it was such a great way to end off the summer, and i'm going
to miss my friends so much!!

[jacob's headed to australia in a month and i won't see him for almost a year!]

last night, laura and i cycled over to the mayfair
to see polytechnique.

the movie is a re-enactment of the Montreal shooting
on dec.6, 1989 at l'institut polytechnique, where Marc Lepine killed 14 women
before killing himself.

i have never been so affected and terrified by a movie.
all 77 minutes were riveting and debilitating and i recommend
this film to anyone.

writing this honestly reminds me of how appalling and horrifying
the experience was watching it last night.

here at guelph, i am an international development student with an emphasis
on gender and development. thus, i take many women's studies courses.

i think that women's studies has been getting a bad rep recently (even my female friends find it daunting and overwhelming).

i, however, risking the fact that i will be dubbed a raging feminist, or be associated with some sort of 'bra burning' ritual... am very much a proponent of this field of study.

you understand then, when i heard that they are trying to get rid of the women's studies program at guelph, i was pissed!

i think this is insulting and preposterous
and could frankly, in my opinion, fall into the category of bigotry.

(i also recently heard a rumour that the president of the university recently upped
his salary by $100,000...and women's studies is being cut because of a depressing budget!
for the love!)

there's a rally today at 1pm at the cannon,
anyone in guelph come and fight for the future women's studies!

i don't post ever. i should be punished accordingly.

you already saw that i visited guelph. it was lots of fun, minus the 7 hour bus ride from hell. i always manage to have the creepiest people in the world sit beside me. the rest of the bus is silent and i have a guy not leaving me alone and insisting i'm one of the few people he's spoken to in 8 years. it was wonderful.

but anyway, at hayleys birthday dinner in ottawa, one of our best friends jessica decided to buy herself and hayley and i tickets to go see kings of leon in toronto! (she just got a credit card, dangerous). we are very excited, even though jes has an exam that day and we'll have to break many laws to get to toronto on time.

but the real point of this post is to share with the world that handsome furs will be in ottawa this thursday (that's tomorrow) at mavericks! and tickets are only $10 at the door.

i was just accepted to study in norway next winter semester!

while i feel as though i have pretty much acclimatized myself to the canadian winters
(after twenty motha lickin years!)

norway is going to be next level!

ms decade III

i'm sorry i've been lackadaisical with my posting
but i was away all weekend
in parry sound (pictures to come)
having a great outdoor adventure with my housemates and some friends.

i realized that i hadn't updated on my birthday
last weekend. it was great.
i was lucky enough to celebrate three times!

first:
in ottawa, with my hometown friends
and my parents.

second: the night of (tuesday, the 24th) with my roommates.
they made me a wonderful potluck dinner with all my favorites
(spinach dip, cranberry almond salad, perogies and cucumber sandwiches!)
i had a midterm the next day and so couldn't celebrate in the usual fashion.

thus...

third: emma came up to visit and i celebrated with all the guelph crew.

they were all fantastic
(and no one made me stress out TOO much about entering my third decade!)

yesterday was absolutely freezing.
i'm getting ridiculously tired of my scarf and mittens.
my tights-clad legs (it seems the cold is affecting my english language skills)
are going to snap off!

and so... just as any north american who has successfully acclimatized themselves to the cold -
i put on a hat.

today was much better.
i feel as though temperature is slowly (VERY slowly) taking a hint
because tomorrow is supposed to +5!!

to beat the winter blahs, we decided to take a trip to ye olde value village
and i got some great finds (including two pairs of men's trousers! hurrah!)
and this plaid shapeless concoction that allows me to chow down on mini eggs
(as i have been all day).

i also desperately need a new pair of plimsols (these are my roommates!)

everyone around here has recently been having a quarter life crisis
about turning twenty.
i don't consider it to be a big deal,
but last night we started the inevitable doomsday
associated with turning another year older
with my friend heather's birthday.

since hayley made one i thought i would add my christmas list:

live 8 dvd. i got the live aid dvd a few years ago, and this would just complete my collection. its also filled with amazing music and all proceeds go to the organization.

season four of lost anyone who claims to be my friend would know that i am OBSESSED with lost. since day one. all through high school phil and alexis and sometimes others would come to my house once a week to watch it. no talking allowed.

a pair of TOMS shoes for every pair purchased, TOMS gives a pair of shoes to a child in need in places like argentina and south africa. amazing, yes? and they're also super cute!

a pablo neruda anthology.

and my final wish is that the OC transpo bus strike will end so i can return to having a life instead of sitting around watching season one of one tree hill and making (and then eating) nanaimo bars.

p.s. h brooks (and various other friends who decided to abandon me and go to university elsewhere) is in town and it is very exciting. and also: i have a kitten, pictures will come soon. her name is gatsby and she loves me so much. almost as much as i love her.

p.p.s i was in the citizen, this is not me bragging i promise. its just hilarious because i look like a nordic ski instructor in the picture. it was in thursdays paper but thats it for hints. i dont want to make it that easy to find.

ottawa got a large dumping (sorry, that's such a gross word)
of snow just before i came home last week.
my dad couldn't get his car out of the driveway so he was forced to walk
... which made him quite upset.

however, he made up a game that he was dying to tell me about later that night.
he called it 'four degrees of kevin bacon'...
i tried to correct him saying there was a game called 'six degrees of separation'
but he insisted it all started with kevin bacon because, and i quote,

"even though he's been in every shitty movie ever made,
he's made them with alot of people".
(or something to that effect)

anyway, his game goes something like this:

1. put your iPod on shuffle

2. let's say Neil Young pops up with 'heart of gold'

(my dad's iPod is littered with Neil because he has the largest mancrush on him.
my sisters and i once asked him if he would go on oprah to meet
neil young. my dad said yes but then explained that
neil young is too cool to go on oprah)

3. let's say the next song is 'what its worth' by buffalo springfield,
you would have to find the connection between the two songs.
... maybe that was the easiest one on the planet
(neil young was in buffalo springfield with stephen stills), but you get his idea?

he was so proud when he told me that he could link
up every song on his 45-minute walk.

the point of the story is that whenever i have to walk
anywhere in these

she's my roommates' barn cat
and we just found out she has fleas.
and i am petrified.
i don't touch her anymore, and although it's dramatic,
everytime i see her bounce around our living room
i picture grenades of tiny vermin (that's what they are to me)
being catapulted from her calico coat.
and it makes me shudder.
cats are cute when they don't carry creepy creatures.

on a lighter note,
i have been listening an awful lot to these guys these days:

as i make notes for my final exam (yay!) on
political ecology (boo!)
i am lulled into a false sense of security about this exam,
by these wonderful (CANADIAN) men.
i saw them, as well as ohbijou, open for final fantasy here in
guelph last year and i fell in love.
they're coming to guelph's annual winter music festival 'hillside inside'
this year, and i am beyond ecstatic.
