this weekend for thanksgiving i found myelf

out of ottawa and a ferry-ride into quebec

at chateau montebello.

it was my grandmother's 80th birthday

and so all 24 of us (on my mom's side) gathered

to celebrate!

even though i wasn't able to bring any leftovers

back to guelph... it was a great weekend!

(complete with family-wide basketball game.

this is a post i've been meaning to write for a while...
(as my anticipation has been climbing to unforeseen heights
ever since i found out about it last year)

but the release of WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE is finally almost a week away!!

the pairing of my favorite children's book with an acoustic version of one of my favorite
arcade fire songs for the trailer basically makes my life complete!

the soundtrack is bananas!
(i don't think i've ever used this expression before. first time for everything?)

and this whole project just makes my love for spike jonze grow tenfold!

jeggings?

i was in toronto this past weekend visiting my sister (photos to come)
and on my way to the bus station to come home,
i made a stop in at h&m.

as always, i found some wonderfully cheap items...
but being that i am attempting to budget myself this semester,
i landed in line with only two items: a pair of light denim leggings with ankle zippers
and a thick, knit winter headband.

i was two spots away from the cash...when i thought of my dad
and how disappointed he would be with my spending habits on frivolous, unnecessary
items (he doesn't necessarily view fashion as a living staple).

so i ducked out of line and surrendered my goods and booked it out of the store
before i could talk myself back into it.

but, alas! ALL I HAVE BEEN THINKING ABOUT IS THOSE JEGGINGS!
(jean + leggings = jeggings?)

i'm dying inside. all i want to do is go back and get them, so much so,
that i'm trying to devise a way that i can get to h&m during my one hour stop over
next weekend on my way home for thanksgiving.

uggghhhh.
i'm hopeless.

this weekend i was talking to my friend kohen about our shared love

and i told him to see (500) days of summer.

mado and i watched it last week and it was great.

(obviously though. zooey deschanel + joseph gordon-levitt + the smiths = my life).

despite the fact that i'm really excited to get back to all my friends
in guelph... i'm sad to be leaving ottawa!

i always start off my summers with grandiose ideas as to how
i'm going to spend my free time, and at the end of every summer,
hardly any of these ideas are realized!

however, i find that i don't really mind.

on thursday mado, erica, jacob, rowan and i went
to rowan's cottage near blue sea lake and it was one of the best
weekends (pseudo-weekend?) of the summer!

we hiked half an hour to the camping spot and set up camp by the water,
went swimming, played cards, jammed by the fire (despite the fact that
i had no musical talents to offer up!) and definitely did a little
damage to our livers.

it was such a great way to end off the summer, and i'm going
to miss my friends so much!!

[jacob's headed to australia in a month and i won't see him for almost a year!]

shit scared

last night, laura and i cycled over to the mayfair
to see polytechnique.

the movie is a re-enactment of the Montreal shooting
on dec.6, 1989 at l'institut polytechnique, where Marc Lepine killed 14 women
before killing himself.

i have never been so affected and terrified by a movie.
all 77 minutes were riveting and debilitating and i recommend
this film to anyone.

writing this honestly reminds me of how appalling and horrifying
the experience was watching it last night.

everyone: see it.

saturday was the 'great glebe garage sale' in my neighborhood, otherwise known as

soo i watched this terrible show on cosmotv last night 

(the only decent channel we get because it plays sex & the city constantly)

called vanity lair... it's about beautiful, shallow people competing for a cash prize. 

this is not about the contestants however,

she's a british former model and current t.v. presenter

(who is dating alex turner, frontman of ARCTIC MONKEYS)

which is just basically amazing.

here at guelph, i am an international development student with an emphasis
on gender and development. thus, i take many women's studies courses.

i think that women's studies has been getting a bad rep recently (even my female friends find it daunting and overwhelming).

i, however, risking the fact that i will be dubbed a raging feminist, or be associated with some sort of 'bra burning' ritual... am very much a proponent of this field of study.

you understand then, when i heard that they are trying to get rid of the women's studies program at guelph, i was pissed!

i think this is insulting and preposterous
and could frankly, in my opinion, fall into the category of bigotry.


(i also recently heard a rumour that the president of the university recently upped
his salary by $100,000...and women's studies is being cut because of a depressing budget!
for the love!)

there's a rally today at 1pm at the cannon,
anyone in guelph come and fight for the future women's studies!

going for the gold (but don't make it look like you're trying TOO hard)

i know would appreciate it.

i've recently been thinking an awful lot about my 2006 summer.
this is when i met my best friends jenny morris (fashionmademefunky.blogspot.com)
and scarlett smith.

we met at a leadership seminar in victoria, b.c. - one of the most beautiful places i have ever been-
and it turned into a romance!

anyway, i love these girls. and i have been thinking an awful lot about them
and so i wanted to acknowledge what they mean to me.
