dear santa

since hayley made one i thought i would add my christmas list:

live 8 dvd. i got the live aid dvd a few years ago, and this would just complete my collection. its also filled with amazing music and all proceeds go to the organization.

season four of lost anyone who claims to be my friend would know that i am OBSESSED with lost. since day one. all through high school phil and alexis and sometimes others would come to my house once a week to watch it. no talking allowed.

a pair of TOMS shoes for every pair purchased, TOMS gives a pair of shoes to a child in need in places like argentina and south africa. amazing, yes? and they're also super cute!

a pablo neruda anthology.

and my final wish is that the OC transpo bus strike will end so i can return to having a life instead of sitting around watching season one of one tree hill and making (and then eating) nanaimo bars.

p.s. h brooks (and various other friends who decided to abandon me and go to university elsewhere) is in town and it is very exciting. and also: i have a kitten, pictures will come soon. her name is gatsby and she loves me so much. almost as much as i love her.

p.p.s i was in the citizen, this is not me bragging i promise. its just hilarious because i look like a nordic ski instructor in the picture. it was in thursdays paper but thats it for hints. i dont want to make it that easy to find.

p.p.p.s i am such a ghost on this blog, that will end soon!

six degrees

ottawa got a large dumping (sorry, that's such a gross word)
of snow just before i came home last week.
my dad couldn't get his car out of the driveway so he was forced to walk
... which made him quite upset.

however, he made up a game that he was dying to tell me about later that night.
he called it 'four degrees of kevin bacon'...
i tried to correct him saying there was a game called 'six degrees of separation'
but he insisted it all started with kevin bacon because, and i quote,

"even though he's been in every shitty movie ever made,
he's made them with alot of people".
(or something to that effect)

anyway, his game goes something like this:

1. put your iPod on shuffle

2. let's say Neil Young pops up with 'heart of gold'

(my dad's iPod is littered with Neil because he has the largest mancrush on him.
my sisters and i once asked him if he would go on oprah to meet
neil young. my dad said yes but then explained that
neil young is too cool to go on oprah)

3. let's say the next song is 'what its worth' by buffalo springfield,
you would have to find the connection between the two songs.
... maybe that was the easiest one on the planet
(neil young was in buffalo springfield with stephen stills), but you get his idea?

he was so proud when he told me that he could link
up every song on his 45-minute walk.

the point of the story is that whenever i have to walk
anywhere in these

effing snow (camouflaging black ice!) i play this game.

...i like to think it improves my musical knowledge.

i wish i could get my phil

that is, of philip lim.

i first discovered philip lim in grade twelve when i asked
my mother to fashion me a dress based on his design
(as seen here on kate hudson):

my mother, a wizard with the sewing machine,
finished with this:
(i was quite proud).

i'm pretty surprised that i haven't blogged about him sooner.
his designs are flawless and feminine
and, though sometimes a little more conservative,
he is nonetheless one of my favorite designers.

i just found out that he recently started a kids' collection!
while this seems a little excessive,
i have to admit that if i have the funds when i'm a mother,
my children will definitely be rocking philip lim.

here are some photos of his holiday collection for women
(i am swooning):

i couldn't resist

listen up:

long lean queen - bear hands

fleas lakes and yams

this is lexie (hi lexie):

she's my roommates' barn cat
and we just found out she has fleas.
and i am petrified.
i don't touch her anymore, and although it's dramatic,
everytime i see her bounce around our living room
i picture grenades of tiny vermin (that's what they are to me)
being catapulted from her calico coat.
and it makes me shudder.
cats are cute when they don't carry creepy creatures.
(tool of the day? apparently alliteration).

on a lighter note,
i have been listening an awful lot to these guys these days:

as i make notes for my final exam (yay!) on
political ecology (boo!)
i am lulled into a false sense of security about this exam,
by these wonderful (CANADIAN) men.
i saw them, as well as ohbijou, open for final fantasy here in
guelph last year and i fell in love.
they're coming to guelph's annual winter music festival 'hillside inside'
this year, and i am beyond ecstatic.
(check out the rest of the line-up, it's going to be religious.)

http://www.hillsidefestival.ca/page.php?id=193

last year heather and i saw tokyo police club, the weakerthans, wintersleep,
cuff the duke, city and colour and so many more.

(this is heather, she's lovely).

...

to end off this incredibly sporadic post, i will conclude
with my dinner plans: SUSHI.
there's a little place downtown that has the best
vegetarian maki with yam tempura...and although
i'm pretty sure yam is a very american term
(well, it certainly isn't japanese)
sweet potato just sounds so much...sweeter.

adios!
i'll see you when i'm back in ottawa!

i don't care what anyone says

although i haven't read the books ...

i did see the film (yes, i admitted it)
and i don't care what anyone says...

be he
a) a wizard
b) a vampire
c) Salvador Dali

Robert Pattinson is spectacularly handsome.

almost a month

i'm very aware that it's been almost a month since my last post (?!)

but i finally have a substantial break in my exam period,
and i wanted to talk about a designer i stumbled across at nylonmag.com:

mary katrantzou.

her designs, while requiring some extreme
self-esteem for those of us
who don't exactly look like agyness,
are exquisite and cheeky...
(you'll see what i mean.)

(transparent? eek!)

not yet on the outskirts

my roommates are constantly commenting on my lack
of appropriate leg-wear... and with the weather getting
continually chillier, i'm finding it hard to fight
the warmth factor that trails along with my unused jeans
(i haven't looked for cobwebs quite yet...)

simply put: i love my skirts and dresses,
and despite jack frost's window-tapping
getting progressively louder...
i'll just have to put on some ear muffs.

tis almost the season

i may be a little premature.... but at least my house
isn't adorned in red, green and gold baubles and bells yet.

that being said...
my wish list has been slowly lengthening for quite some time...

some contenders for the top of the list:

sewing machine

holga camera

boosted stiloso headphones

some fantastic pieces for my wardrobe

my new craze

i don't have time to post anything huge right now,
(i'm supposed to be writing my essay on the Zapatista movement)

...obviously not going very well.

here is my new fave.
i listen to it on repeat
as i walk to school
praying that the snow in ottawa
isn't headed my way.
... at least not yet

fingers crossed!

1990?!

the october NYLON has a six-page fashion spread on peaches geldof and cory kennedy.

that got me thinking about the latter.
it seems we all know about her...
mais pourquoi?

so i wikipedia-ed that shit
and found out...
SHE'S A YEAR YOUNGER THAN I AM!

...i really need to start doing something with my life...

ode to the jetset

ever have that bill murray-like feeling that you're waking
up every day to the same day?
i'm in that slump.

and i just want it to go away.

our lovable bum

meet iain macneil.

we call him bumsley, not due to his lack of
housing (don't worry...he's comfortable in an
apartment in montreal)
but because when iain dips a little too much
into his el burro...

this is the result:

hence: the start of a beautiful friendship.

border collie love and we saved latin's hearts.

cap ou pas cap?

i'm french. minimally french speaking, but it comes from both sides of the family so i'll claim it. i love french things like baguettes, serge gainsbourg, victor hugo, le petit prince, french wines, french boys... etc. but today i discovered a new reason to love france, and that reason is 'jeux d'enfants'.

who doesn't like french cinema? amelie, la haine, paris je t'aime, un long dimanche de fian├žailles and happenstance are some of my favourites, so when i heard about this movie i had to download it.

it's an adorable story directed by yann samuell about a boy (julien) and a girl (sophie), played by guillaume canet (add him to my ever-growing list of future husbands) and marion cotillard (the recent oscar winning actress from la mome). saying anything else is giving too much away, but basically it's one of the best movies i've seen in a very long time. like most french movies, the plot is slower moving and the movie itself takes on a sort of whimsical theme (think amelie), but the result is amazing. so really, go download it. or rent it. just find a way to see this movie.

on the subject of french things, what's with the HUGE amount of extremely attractive french actors? take guillaume canet, gaspard ulliel, frederic gorny, louis garrel, benoit magimel, olivier martinez, romain duris, i could keep going.

i think after australia my first vacation will be to france. for an extended stay.

the love never died and now i really really want one.

yes we can

this is the sole reason i would ever wish that i was american:

god, i love him.

over and done with.

spotted:
the kaffiyeh in garage and sirens.

who would have thought that a scarf associated with pakistani terrorists would be
so mainstream?
alert george bush.
let's patriot act that shit outta here.

postscript: definite jokes.

i blame disney

ok so i have a pretty serious confession to make.

i like the jonas brothers. i can blame it on having a 13 year old sister all i want, but i'd probably like them regardless of her obsession. i like their style, i like their faces (minus kevin, he's just not very attractive.) and... i like their music. *gasp*. there goes my street cred.

to give myself some credit, i only like their newest songs. so anything they did in the past when it was all nick jonas and christmas albums or songs called 'mandy' escapes my affection. and if we're getting really specific here its their newest song, love bug, that i have on repeat. and maybe a little burning up here or there.

so when it comes down to it, i dont want to rip off my ears when i hear them. nor do i want to cry. and yes i recorded camp rock. in fact hayley came over specifically to watch it with me so at least i'm not alone in this one.

actually the only thing i don't like about them is that they are evangelical christians. which means we wont be getting married any time soon. too bad.

h brooks this picture is for you (zac efron is the future mr. brooks).

in an effort to prove i don't have horrendous taste in music here's a sampling of other favourites that i think you should download:
we used to vacation -cold war kids
anything by deer tick
be my baby -glasvegas
medicine man -the hush sound
proof -i am kloot
things i did when i was dead -no age
better things -passion pit
and finally, anything by royal wood.

please don't hold my love for the jb against me.

you're like the coolest person i've ever met...

h brooks is a trooper for posting somewhat regularly.
i'm the laziest person alive.
but i now have a job at a jewellery store, more to come on that.
this is a very short post to discuss the merits of michael cera. i'm getting ready to go see nick and norah's infinite playlist with my friend mitch, and i'm EXTREMELY excited.
but i'm also pretty confident that if michael cera wasn't famous, oblivious girls would miss out on his amazingness and he'd be a huge dork. i'd like to tell myself that i would totally be in love with him but i can't be sure.
this is not to say that i'm attracted to his fame, it's not that at all. he just seems like the perfect boy.
i'm not sure where i was going this and i'm sure nothing i've said has been particularly enlightening, but there you go.
